Conakry, Guinea — Severe overnight rains have led to the deaths of at least seven individuals in Conakry, highlighting the city’s susceptibility to extreme weather events. The torrential downpour, which began late Wednesday and persisted into Thursday morning, wreaked havoc across multiple neighborhoods, causing structural collapses and flooding that submerged vehicles.
Local government officials reported seven fatalities, but civil protection agencies indicated that the actual toll might be higher, as search efforts continue for several missing persons. Witnesses recounted harrowing scenes as buildings succumbed to the relentless rains, trapping residents inside. In the Soumanbosiya neighborhood, Benjamin Kamano tragically lost his three children and their mother when their home partially collapsed. “I heard the children calling for help and found myself underwater,” he shared, reflecting on the chaos that unfolded.
Conakry’s largest municipality, Matoto, was particularly hard-hit, with two homes collapsing and at least five confirmed deaths. Reports indicate that the rainfall on Wednesday night measured a staggering 70.8 millimeters, overwhelming the city’s drainage systems and contributing to the extensive flooding.
The crisis has been exacerbated by long-standing issues related to urban planning, including unregulated construction practices and blocked waterways. Since late June, flooding incidents in Guinea have claimed at least 15 lives and impacted over 1,200 households.
Lancei Touré, director of Guinea’s National Agency for Emergency and Humanitarian Disaster Management, acknowledged that inadequate infrastructure has worsened the impact of such severe weather. He emphasized the need for robust planning to improve the city’s resilience against future flooding.
In a statement released Thursday, the government expressed profound sorrow for the lives lost and the extensive damage sustained. Officials pledged to provide aid to affected families and emphasized the importance of addressing the fundamental causes of the city’s vulnerability to extreme weather.
