Convicted: Man Guilty of Murder and Manslaughter in Deadly Napa County DUI Crash

NAPA COUNTY, Calif. – A man has been found guilty of second-degree murder and gross vehicular manslaughter after a fatal collision in 2020 that claimed the life of an 87-year-old man in Yountville. Mauricio Ramirez Aguilar, 40, was driving under the influence when his pickup truck collided with a Nissan Pathfinder on October 17, 2020, killing Constantine Tsavalas.

Evidence from the investigation revealed that Aguilar had a blood alcohol content of .204 percent, which was nearly three times the legal limit. Additionally, he was driving at a speed of approximately 86 mph at the time of the crash. This was not Aguilar’s first offense related to drunk driving, as he had two prior DUI convictions, both involving collisions.

During Aguilar’s previous DUI sentences, he was given a Watson Admonition, warning him of the serious consequences of drinking and driving. Despite this, the fatal accident in 2020 led to his conviction on charges of second-degree murder and gross vehicular manslaughter.

The jury reached a verdict after a 12-day trial, where Aguilar’s history of reckless behavior behind the wheel was brought to light. His prior DUI incidents, including one in 2019 where first responders had to extract him from a burning car, underscored the severity of his actions and disregard for public safety.

Aguilar is set to be sentenced on June 12, facing the consequences of his choices that have resulted in devastating consequences for others. The case serves as a potent reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence and the potential legal ramifications for those who choose to do so.
