NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The timeline for the potential release of writings belonging to the individual responsible for the tragic Covenant School shooting remains uncertain. Audrey Elizabeth Hale, who identified as male, fatally shot three children and three staff members at the school in March 2023 before being confronted by law enforcement.
The Tennessee Court of Appeals recently returned a request for Hale’s writings to the Davidson County Chancery Court, which will oversee the next steps regarding their release. The situation has garnered attention from several parties, including the Tennessee Star, its editor Michael Patrick Leahy, the Tennessee Firearms Association, former Hamilton County Sheriff Jim Hammond, Judicial Watch, and state Rep. Todd Gardenhire, R-Chattanooga. These organizations have filed a lawsuit seeking access to Hale’s journals and other writings.
The appellate court dismissed arguments that Hale’s writings were protected by copyright laws, stating that such claims were “without merit.” Additionally, the court countered claims asserting that the documents should remain undisclosed due to ongoing criminal investigations. It noted that the Metro Nashville Police Department recognized that its investigation into the incident had been concluded, with no further criminal prosecutions anticipated.
The court’s ruling does not stipulate a specific timeframe for the release of Hale’s writings. Meanwhile, the Covenant Children’s Trust, representing the families of the slain children, has 60 days to decide whether to pursue an appeal regarding the court’s decision. Eric G. Osborne, an attorney for the trust, indicated that a resolution on an appeal has yet to be reached.
In April 2025, the FBI had previously disclosed some of Hale’s writings, which revealed insights into the individual’s thought process prior to the shooting. The documents included reflections on the planned attack and discussions surrounding firearms and training.
