Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – A new study led by the University of Pennsylvania and Boston University reveals shocking data showing that the true death toll from COVID-19 in the United States may have been severely underestimated. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, highlights the discrepancy between reported COVID-19 deaths and excess deaths due to non-COVID natural causes like cardiovascular diseases and chronic illnesses.
Researchers found that increases in non-COVID excess deaths occurred concurrently or prior to spikes in reported COVID-19 deaths in most US counties. This suggests that many uncounted excess deaths were likely related to COVID-19. The study challenges the existing understanding of the pandemic’s toll, shedding light on flaws in death certificate coding and the impact in nonmetropolitan areas with limited health care resources.
The analysis, spanning 30 months from March 2020 to August 2022, estimated that 1.2 million excess natural-cause deaths occurred across US counties. Shockingly, roughly 163,000 of these deaths did not list COVID-19 as a cause on the death certificates. Geographical patterns revealed discrepancies in death reporting, with rural areas and certain regions showing significant gaps in reported COVID-19 deaths compared to non-COVID excess deaths.
Furthermore, the study identified potential factors contributing to the uncounted COVID-19 deaths, including limited testing in rural areas, political biases affecting death certificate coding, and successful mitigation strategies in some states.
