Flowood, Mississippi – A tragic incident unfolded in Rankin County as a high school student was taken into custody for the alleged murder of her mother and the shooting of her stepfather on Tuesday. The victim, identified as 40-year-old Ashley Smylie, was found deceased in her Brandon home by her husband in the evening.
Smylie, a mathematics teacher at Northwest Rankin Middle School where her daughter was a student, was a well-respected member of the community. The shocking event sent shockwaves through the area, leaving many in disbelief over the incident.
According to Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey, the stepfather discovered Smylie’s lifeless body with a gunshot wound upon returning home. He also sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder during the encounter with his stepdaughter, who was reportedly armed with a pistol at the time of the incident.
After a physical struggle between the stepfather and the teenage suspect, the stepfather managed to disarm her, leading to her escape into the backyard and subsequent flight over a fence. Law enforcement agencies promptly initiated a search operation, eventually locating and apprehending the suspect without any further disturbances.
The teenager now faces charges of murder and attempted murder based on the circumstances surrounding the crime scene. She has been placed in custody at the Rankin County Juvenile Detention Center pending her initial court appearance scheduled for the following morning.
