NASHVILLE, TN – A former camp counselor from the Quad Cities is now facing murder charges after a tragic mass shooting in Nashville. Jovien Smith, 26, is accused of a violent altercation that escalated into a deadly confrontation over the weekend.
Authorities reported that Smith was involved in a heated argument with his girlfriend inside a Dodge minivan on Saturday night. During the dispute, Smith allegedly threw her cellphone out of the vehicle. When the woman stopped the car, Smith reportedly drew a handgun and began firing.
The woman, who was struck multiple times, managed to escape and seek help from a nearby residence. Smith then allegedly turned the weapon on her five children, tragically wounding four of them. A four-year-old child succumbed to their injuries, while two siblings, aged seven and one, remain in critical condition. A 13-year-old is recovering from a stomach wound, and the children’s mother is hospitalized with severe injuries.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the victims but confirmed they are originally from Illinois. This shocking incident has drawn attention to Smith’s past, as he was once featured in a local news story about his transformation from a troubled youth to a camp counselor at Camp Abe Lincoln.
In a 2018 interview, Smith expressed his dedication to positively impacting others, stating his belief that he was making a difference in the world. However, his current situation paints a stark contrast to his previous ambitions, as he now faces numerous felony charges, including criminal homicide.
Smith is being held in a Nashville jail on a $2.6 million bond, with his court appearance pending. The case has left the community and those who knew him grappling with disbelief and sorrow over the tragic turn of events.
