MIAMI — A shooting incident in Northwest Miami on Friday left one man dead and another in police custody, according to local law enforcement. The suspect remained at the scene and asserted he acted in self-defense, prompting an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
Around 2:05 p.m., a ShotSpotter alert notified Miami-Dade Police of multiple gunshots fired near Northwest 4th Avenue and 71st Street. Officers arrived to find a male victim who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Miami Fire Rescue rushed him to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Authorities reported that the alleged shooter, who was cooperative with the police, claimed self-defense during the encounter. While both individuals were in separate vehicles, the specifics of their argument leading up to the violence remain unclear. Police recovered three firearms from the scene, raising questions about the events that transpired.
“We have the suspected shooter in custody and are currently conducting an interview with him,” said police spokesman Mike Vega. “Two witnesses were also present and are providing their accounts of what they observed.” Authorities are actively searching for surveillance footage from nearby businesses and residences to shed light on the incident.
Vega noted that it is still too early to determine what ignited the argument, but emphasized that a significant number of shots were fired. “Evidence suggests over ten shots were exchanged, one of which resulted in a fatal injury,” he added.
The firearms recovered include two found near a blue vehicle at the scene and one taken from the alleged shooter. Authorities are working to establish if the deceased individual also discharged a weapon, further complicating the investigation.
As the police continue to gather evidence, the community remains in shock over the tragic incident. While no additional details about the individuals involved have been released, investigators are focusing on piecing together the sequence of events that led to this deadly confrontation.
