Federal authorities announced Friday the indictment of seven members of a criminal gang involved in a spree of nefarious activities ranging from drug and gun trafficking to robbery and homicide, utilizing dating websites to lure victims under the guise of escort services. Operating across several states from New Hampshire to Virginia, the group is also suspected in multiple deaths linked to their criminal conduct.
Gerard Karam, the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, reported that this gang, known informally as the “fentanyl robbery gang,” orchestrated their crimes by arranging meetings at victims’ homes under various pretenses. Once inside, the criminals robbed their targets of valuables including firearms, money, electronics, personal identification, and drug substances.
Authorities uncovered that victims were frequently offered drugs disguised as cocaine, which unbeknownst to them, contained lethal doses of fentanyl. This tactic was reportedly employed to incapacitate the victims, thereby facilitating the robbery. In instances where this approach failed, the gang resorted to violent home invasions, characterized by armed threats and physical assaults to subdue the inhabitants.
The group’s brutal operations have been tied to three fatalities in Pennsylvania, specifically in Berks and Luzerne counties, and one in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Officials indicated that further investigations might reveal additional victims.
Charges levied against the indicted individuals include kidnapping, aggravated identity theft, drug distribution conspiracies, and directly linking the distribution of fentanyl to resulting deaths and severe injuries. It emerged that some of the accused have connections to established gangs based in New York City.
The investigation drew on the collaborative efforts of multiple law enforcement bodies, encompassing state, county, and local agencies in both Pennsylvania and New Hampshire, with additional support from national agencies such as the FBI and the U.S. Marshal’s Service based in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
