Deadly Crime Spree Unveiled: Gang Uses Dating Sites for Robbery and Murder across Eastern U.S.

Federal prosecutors announced on Friday that a gang, implicated in a spate of violent crimes across several states from New Hampshire to Virginia, employed the use of dating websites to lure victims into illegal schemes involving drugs, prostitution, and armed robbery. The group, known for harnessing the potent drug fentanyl, has been linked to four deaths due to their illicit activities.

Gerard Karam, the U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, detailed the modus operandi of the so-called “fentanyl robbery gang.” He explained that gang members or their associates would arrange meetings at the homes of their targets under various pretenses, including fabricated drug transactions. These setups were intended to rob the victims of valuable items such as firearms, cash, electronic devices, and personal identification.

The criminals often purported to offer cocaine to their victims, which unbeknownst to them, was laced with fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid. In cases where individuals declined the drugs, gang members resorted to violence or stealthily administered the drugs to incapacitate them, facilitating robbery.

For victims who were not subdued quickly or effectively, the gang escalated their tactics to home invasions. Partners in crime would allow armed members into the homes where they would then execute thefts through intimidation, aggression, and outright violence.

Authorities believe that the gang is responsible for three deaths in Pennsylvania, specifically in Berks and Luzerne counties, and one in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. They suspect there might be additional undisclosed casualties linked to the gang’s felonious campaigns.

In a significant crackdown, seven members of this formidable gang have been indicted on a slew of charges. These include kidnapping, aggravated identity theft, conspiracy to distribute drugs, distribution of fentanyl resulting in death and serious bodily injury, and various weapons-related offenses. It was noted by Karam that some of the indicted have connections to established gangs in New York City, pointing to a larger network of organized crime.

The investigation that led to these indictments was a collaborative endeavor involving state, county, and local law enforcement agencies across Pennsylvania and New Hampshire. The FBI and the U.S. Marshal’s Service in Scranton, Pennsylvania, also played crucial roles in the apprehension and indictment of the gang members.

This case highlights not only the dangerous intersection of drug trafficking and violent crime but also the innovative and sinister methods criminals employ to exploit and victimize unsuspecting individuals. The authorities remain vigilant and continue their efforts to dismantle such networks, ensuring the safety and security of communities across the region.
