Bucksnort, Tennessee — A tragic explosion at an explosives manufacturer on Friday morning has left multiple people dead and several others unaccounted for. The blast occurred at Accurate Energetic Systems, located about 50 miles west of Nashville, around 8 a.m. local time, prompting an immediate emergency response.
Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis confirmed at a news conference later in the day that some individuals have died as a result of the explosion but did not specify the exact number. Initial reports indicated at least 19 people were missing, but this figure was later adjusted to 18 after one individual was confirmed safe at home.
Emergency teams from various agencies have been deployed, with over 300 personnel currently working at the scene. Investigators are in the process of identifying all personnel present during the explosion and are in communication with their families to relay critical information. Authorities have stated that recovery efforts are likely to continue throughout the weekend.
Witnesses in the nearby community of Lobelville reported feeling their houses shake due to the force of the blast. “I thought the house had collapsed with me inside of it,” said Gentry Stover, who lives near the facility. He awoke to the sound of the explosion, quickly realizing its source.
State Representative Jody Barrett, whose district includes nearby Dickson, expressed his concern about the potential economic repercussions of the explosion, given the plant’s role as a major employer in the region. He noted that even from 15 miles away, he clearly heard the intense noise, likening it to an object crashing through his roof.
According to its website, Accurate Energetic Systems specializes in the development and manufacturing of energetic products for both defense and commercial purposes, serving clients including the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security.
As emergency responders continue their work, the Hickman County Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to steer clear of the area surrounding the explosion site, emphasizing the ongoing investigation and recovery process. The impact of this tragic event is still unfolding as the community grapples with the loss and potential ramifications.
