IRVINE, Calif. — Police in Irvine launched a murder investigation early Monday morning following a deadly incident at Turning Tides, a local sober living home. Authorities responded to a distress call at approximately 6 a.m. and discovered an 18-year-old man severely injured from an apparent blunt force trauma or stabbing.
The young man was quickly transported to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. His identity has not yet been disclosed by officials.
The suspect, 24-year-old Braxton Tysean Hill from Indiana, reportedly fled the location shortly after the incident. After a swift manhunt assisted by the California Highway Patrol, Hill was apprehended near Barstow around 9 a.m.
Details regarding what initiated the fatal altercation remain unclear. Both the suspect and the victim were known to be residents of Turning Tides, which has been operating as a sober living facility.
Local residents expressed their concerns about the facility. According to Leif Olson, an Irvine resident, the conversion of the residence into a sober living home has led to an increase in police and emergency medical activity in what was previously a quiet area. “It’s always been a peaceful, no activity type of community,” Olson noted. “Ever since they converted this to a sober living facility, we have had either police activity or ambulances because of drug overdoses.”
Kyle Oldoerp, a representative from the Irvine Police Department, acknowledged that the police have responded to calls at this residence in the past, although none were of serious nature prior to this tragedy.
The arrest of Hill marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation, but many questions remain unanswered as authorities continue to piece together the events that led to the killing.
