Police say the suspect was arrested near the scene on the far east side.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — A 29-year-old Indianapolis man was fatally shot early Sunday after he drove to help his girlfriend during a dispute with her ex-boyfriend on the city’s far east side, according to police and court records.
Za Sean Allen Davis died after officers found him wounded inside a vehicle near James Run Way shortly after 4 a.m. Quinton Sanders, 31, was arrested near the scene and faces a preliminary murder charge. The case has drawn attention because police say Davis had called 911 minutes before the shooting.
Investigators said Davis contacted dispatchers about five minutes before he was shot and said he was going to help his girlfriend. Court records say the woman had been arguing with Sanders, her ex-boyfriend. Police said the woman got out of Sanders’ car and began walking toward Davis, who was waiting in an SUV. Sanders then allegedly walked up behind her and fired into Davis’ vehicle.
Responding Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers arrived moments later and found Davis critically wounded. Police said Sanders tried to leave the area while armed with a gun and covered in blood. Officers detained him near the scene. Davis was taken for emergency care but died from his injuries. The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified him as Za Sean Allen Davis.
Police said the dispute began before the shooting and involved Sanders and his former girlfriend. Investigators said Sanders later told officers he had been arguing with the woman because she “had another dude.” According to reports on the case, Sanders also told police, “I am not a bad person. I’m not a monster or anything,” before asking for an attorney.
The shooting happened during a holiday weekend marked by gun violence in Indianapolis. Police treated the case as a homicide and continued gathering statements, records and physical evidence. Officials have not released every detail from the investigation, including the full timeline of what happened before Davis arrived or how many shots were fired.
Sanders was booked into the Marion County Jail and held without bond, according to reports on the case. He was expected to appear in court Wednesday. Prosecutors will review the investigation before deciding final charges. Detectives may also submit additional evidence, including 911 records, witness statements and forensic findings.
Local advocates said the killing shows how domestic disputes can affect people beyond the couple involved. Danyette Smith with Indy Champions said domestic violence “can have an impact on everyone.” IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson said the loss cannot be undone and said police want people to understand how quickly conflicts can turn deadly when a gun is present.
The case remained active Wednesday as Sanders awaited court proceedings and Davis’ family and friends mourned his death.
