BRENHAM, Texas – Deadly crashes in the Brazos Valley on Monday raised concerns about driving safety in wet conditions, according to information provided by DPS troopers. Two fatalities occurred as a result of the accidents, which were attributed to driving too fast for the wet roads and hydroplaning.
One of the crashes took place west of Brenham on Highway 290 and Sunset Road, where an eastbound SUV crossed into the westbound lanes and was struck by a semi. The driver of the SUV, 59-year-old Anita Goodrich of Brenham, was killed along with an unidentified passenger. The driver of the semi sustained suspected minor injuries and was taken to a Brenham hospital.
In another incident in Grimes County, a vehicle on the two-lane portion of Highway 249 near county road 304 struck a concrete culvert, overturned, and became submerged in water. The driver, identified as 26-year-old Stephen Oderinde of Spring, tragically lost his life in the accident.
DPS Sgt. Justin Ruiz emphasized that driving too fast for the wet roads and hydroplaning were contributing factors to the crashes. He also highlighted other safety suggestions, including maintaining distance from other vehicles, adjusting headlights to stay on at all times, avoiding cruise control, steering clear of flooded highways, staying informed about roadway and weather conditions, and following updates from local news and authorities.
