New Orleans, Louisiana – A dangerous combination of wildfire smoke and dense fog led to multiple vehicle crashes on Interstate 55, resulting in a harrowing mile-long pileup. The incident tragically left at least seven people dead and 63 others injured as a result of the low visibility conditions.
The initial death toll of 7 was later revised to 8, but that additional fatality was determined to be a result of confusion due to the intense fire and extensive wreckage, according to Louisiana State Police. The crashes left behind a devastating scene of mangled and burned vehicles, with responders working to clear the roadway and inspect the bridge in the aftermath.
The affected stretch of interstate was partially reopened the following morning, but the cleanup efforts were complicated by a tanker truck carrying hazardous material that caught fire. The search and recovery process was further hindered by the challenging conditions, with efforts to clear the scene ongoing.
Louisiana State Police spokesperson Sgt. Kate Stegall described the chaotic nature of the crashes, with over 150 vehicles spanning about a mile’s distance. The series of collisions, caused by low visibility from the smoke and fog, left the bridge littered with the remains of cars, SUVs, and semitrucks.
In addition to search and recovery efforts, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards called for blood donations to replenish supplies used in caring for the wounded. The tragic incident underscored the dangers posed by the combination of dense fog and wildfire smoke, which has led to similar hazards for motorists in the past.
The conditions were a result of smoke from wildfires burning in marshes, which combined with dense fog overnight to create what’s sometimes referred to as “superfog.” This dangerous phenomenon drastically reduced visibility for motorists, causing a dense fog advisory to be in effect at the time of the crashes.
The events on Interstate 55 serve as a sobering reminder of the dangers posed by challenging weather conditions and the importance of taking precautions while driving in such hazardous situations.
