EUCLID, Ohio — A mother’s relentless pursuit of justice for her son has drawn attention in the wake of her son’s tragic death in the line of duty. Officer Jacob Derbin was fatally shot on May 11, 2024, during an ambush that has generated questions surrounding the investigation and police protocols.
Dawn Derbin believes her son’s case reflects broader issues regarding officer safety and accountability within local law enforcement. Following Jacob’s death, she began independently examining the events surrounding his murder, raising concerns about how the police handled the situation. According to public records, the alleged shooter, Deshawn Vaughn, had a history of violent crime, including a series of incidents leading up to the fatal confrontation.
In a statement, Dawn expressed her belief that justice extends beyond merely holding the shooter accountable. “Justice would mean ensuring our officers are safe and that the community is protected,” she said. She noted that Vaughn was reportedly linked to violent incidents, including the serious assault of the mother of his children and a separate shooting just days before Jacob’s death.
Dawn insists the response from police was inadequate. Only three officers responded to the 911 call from a victim who reported seeing Vaughn near her home, raising concerns about protocol adherence, particularly involving a known violent offender.
Her determination for answers has led her to campaign for changes in policies that govern how officers respond to calls when suspects are known to be dangerous. “These incidents can be prevented,” she stated, emphasizing that proper protocols could have saved lives. Dawn is also calling for a comprehensive review of the investigation into her son’s death, maintaining that she seeks clarity on whether Jacob’s death might have involved friendly fire—a concern she feels has not been adequately addressed.
Despite a recent report from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation asserting that no evidence suggested anyone but Vaughn was responsible for Officer Derbin’s death, Dawn remains unsatisfied. The investigation was presented to a grand jury that ultimately returned a “no bill”—a legal term indicating insufficient evidence for an indictment—not an exoneration of involved officers, as some might assume.
“This grand jury outcome does not equate to a declaration of innocence,” she argued, underscoring her belief that the local justice system has not fully served its purpose in her son’s case. With few answers and rising frustration, she has reached out to national authorities to take a closer look at the circumstances surrounding her son’s murder.
Last week, Dawn addressed a letter to the White House, imploring the Department of Justice to investigate her son’s case and the Euclid Police Department’s procedures. “As a mother, I am asking for a review based on my son’s service as a police officer and his commitment to protecting our community,” she wrote.
Her efforts coincide with National Police Week, a time dedicated to honoring fallen officers across the United States. During a memorial in London, Ohio, Dawn reflected on the legacy Jacob leaves behind—a legacy of dedication and service that she is determined to uphold.
