Los Angeles, California – Authorities are investigating a series of violent deaths involving homeless individuals in Willowbrook, raising concerns about potential links among the incidents. Among the deceased is Kevin Johnson, a former NFL player known as “Big Kev,” who was found dead last month in an encampment where he had been living.
Johnson, 55, was discovered unresponsive after sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a man in distress on January 21. Medics at the scene confirmed his death, and an autopsy revealed that he suffered from both blunt force trauma and stab wounds. His death is part of a troubling pattern of violence affecting the homeless community in the area, with four people having been murdered since October.
Detectives are examining the circumstances surrounding these deaths to determine if they might be connected. “We are considering the possibility of a link among the cases,” said Nicole Nishida, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s department. She emphasized that while this avenue is being explored, investigators have yet to draw any definitive conclusions.
The incidents occurred near East 120th Street and Central Avenue, in an area home to a population of vulnerable individuals living along Compton Creek. The nature of the crimes has heightened fears that a single individual or group may be targeting these residents. However, each incident involved a different method of violence, complicating the investigation.
The first reported crime occurred on October 5, when 52-year-old Michelle Steele was shot in the head. She survived for more than a month in the hospital before succumbing to her injuries on November 12. On December 4, Octavio Arias, another homeless man aged 52, was found dead from severe head and neck trauma, according to the medical examiner’s report.
Following Johnson’s death, a fourth victim emerged just five days later. Mauro Alfaro, 52, died from multiple traumatic injuries, and investigators have ruled his death a homicide, though details regarding the manner of death remain unclear.
In total, eight detectives are tasked with exploring these homicides, with two assigned to each case. The motives behind these attacks are still unknown, but the alarming rise in violence serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by individuals without stable housing in Los Angeles County.
In areas like Skid Row, gang activity has become a prevalent issue, where homeless individuals are often coerced into drug trafficking or subjected to extortion by criminal groups. Investigators have noted that similar patterns of violence have emerged in other encampments, intensifying the need for community protection and intervention strategies for homeless populations.
