Officers say everyone involved knew each other; one suspect is in custody.
DETROIT — A man was killed and two other people were injured in a shooting Wednesday night on the city’s east side, Detroit police said. Officers were called about 8 p.m. to the 20400 block of Marx Street near Winchester Avenue, where a suspect was taken into custody.
Police said the three people shot were known to one another, and no threat to the broader neighborhood was immediately identified. A second man suffered injuries that were not life-threatening and was taken to a hospital. A woman was treated at the scene and was listed as stable. Detectives with the Detroit Police Department’s homicide unit began processing the home and front yard for evidence late Wednesday as the investigation moved into the overnight hours. Authorities did not release names, ages, or a possible motive, and said additional details would come after interviews and a review of physical evidence.
According to preliminary information shared by police at the scene, officers arrived within minutes of the 8 p.m. call and found a man who was pronounced dead where he was found. “All parties involved knew each other,” Detroit police said, adding that a suspect was in custody while investigators worked to determine what led up to the gunfire. Crime scene tape blocked off the 20400 block of Marx as uniformed officers and evidence technicians moved in and out of a residence. The second man was transported for treatment and was described as having non-life-threatening injuries. Police said the woman received treatment on site and did not require an immediate hospital trip.
Officials said they were still piecing together the timeline inside the home and on the front step. Investigators photographed shell casings and searched for a firearm thought to be used in the shooting. They did not immediately specify the kind of weapon recovered, if any. Detectives also canvassed neighbors for exterior camera footage from doorbells and security systems that may show movements on Marx Street around the time of the shooting. Police did not say where the suspect was arrested or whether that person was among the injured. The department withheld ages and relationships of the people involved pending notification of family and confirmation by the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The 20400 block of Marx sits on Detroit’s east side, a residential stretch of single-family homes near 8 Mile Road and the I-75 corridor. While shootings draw attention, police have said many east-side calls involve people who know each other and disputes inside homes rather than random street encounters. Wednesday’s case fits that early picture, as police emphasized they do not believe there is an ongoing danger to the public based on the initial accounts. In recent years, detectives have leaned on neighborhood camera networks and community tips to quickly reconstruct movements in similar investigations, often pairing video with ballistic testing done through state crime labs.
Investigators said the homicide unit will submit a warrant packet to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office once interviews and evidence collection are complete. That process typically includes recorded statements from witnesses, medical examiner findings on the deceased man’s cause and manner of death, and any lab results from firearms or fingerprints. If prosecutors authorize charges, an arraignment would follow in 36th District Court in Detroit. Police did not offer a charging timeline but said updates will be released after family notification and prosecutor review. An autopsy is expected in the coming days; no funeral arrangements were announced.
As officers wrapped up at the scene, neighbors watched from porches and doorways along Marx Street. A few residents spoke quietly with detectives and then stepped back as tow trucks and evidence vans came and went. Flashing patrol lights reflected off snow-packed curbs while technicians marked evidence points in the yard and on the walkway. “It’s been a long night,” one officer said while moving traffic around the blocked-off intersection. By late evening, police began removing tape as investigators shifted to follow-up interviews at headquarters.
Police said the investigation remains active early Thursday, with the next significant update expected after preliminary findings are shared with prosecutors. No additional information on identities, ages, or a motive has been released.
