DETROIT, MI – A Detroit man is facing serious charges after authorities say he involved his 11-year-old daughter in a burglary on the city’s east side. The incident unfolded last Tuesday evening on Marquette Drive when the owner of a home being renovated discovered a stranger inside the property.
The homeowner’s son noticed the intruder and immediately called the police. In a shocking turn of events, the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Andre Stephen Curtis, fled the scene on foot, abandoning both a stolen vehicle and his daughter at the location.
Neighbors were taken aback by the commotion as police set up a perimeter in the usually quiet neighborhood. David Bridges, a longtime resident whose grandmother lives next door, expressed disbelief over the incident, emphasizing how out of character it was for the area.
Curtis was eventually apprehended by police in a nearby alley. Authorities charged him with multiple felonies, including home invasion and car theft. However, the most disturbing allegation is that he coerced his young daughter into assisting with the break-in.
Community members are particularly concerned for the well-being of the girl. “As a father myself, I can’t imagine putting my child in harm’s way like that,” Bridges said, reflecting the neighborhood’s collective shock and concern.
The suspect’s bond has been set at $150,000, and he is expected to appear in court again soon. Legal experts suggest the charges could carry severe penalties, especially given the involvement of a minor.
The situation has sparked a broader conversation about the impact of criminal activities on families and the community. Residents are calling for increased vigilance and support systems to prevent such incidents in the future.
While the legal proceedings continue, the young girl’s safety and future remain a priority for social services, which are likely to get involved to ensure her well-being.
