RENO, Nev. – The Washoe County coroner has identified one of the victims killed in a double homicide in Stead early this month. The medical examiner’s office confirmed that 39-year-old Justin Reid was the first victim. He was the father of the suspected shooter, 17-year-old Mashenka Reid, who is now facing murder charges. The second victim’s identity has not yet been disclosed.
More details have emerged about the double homicide that occurred in north Reno on Friday afternoon. According to an arrest report from the Reno Police Department, Mashenka Reid called 911 and confessed to the shootings, stating “I just couldn’t resist the urge to kill somebody” when asked what happened. Reid’s father and younger brother were found dead inside an apartment on Silver Sky Parkway, while her sister was found alive in a locked bedroom, thanks to the timely entry of the officers.
The arrest report presented a timeline of the events surrounding the double homicide. A neighbor was the first to call in the shootings after hearing muffled gunshots and cries for help. Reid called 911 herself and admitted to shooting both her father and brother before dropping the gun, a Walther PPS, inside the apartment. Officers arrived at the scene with the first officer detaining Reid and checking the welfare of others in the apartment. Emergency services arrived and pronounced the father and brother dead.
Reid was taken into custody and read the juvenile Miranda Admonishment and was given the option to speak with law enforcement, which she declined. The tragedy continues to be investigated by detectives with the Robbery/Homicide Unit. Authorities urge anyone with pertinent information to contact the Reno Police Department’s non-emergency line at (775) 334-2121 or reach out to Secret Witness at (775) 322-4900 or through their website.
