Butler Township, Pennsylvania — Recently released body and dashboard camera footage by the Butler Township Police Department has shed new light on a harrowing incident involving former President Donald Trump, which took place in July. The footage captures the fraught moments leading up to and following a shooting at an open-air rally where Trump was speaking.
In the videos, law enforcement officers are seen grappling with confusion and miscommunication as they respond to the unfolding crisis. One video particularly highlights a local police officer’s frustration over security arrangements, noting that he had previously requested the U.S. Secret Service to secure the building from where the gunman later opened fire.
During the rally, Trump was grazed by a bullet, resulting in a minor ear injury. The incident tragically left one person dead and two others severely injured. Authorities identified the gunman as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was positioned on a rooftop just outside the rally’s designated security perimeter.
The critical moment came when a Butler County police officer was lifted onto the roof where Crooks was spotted. Recognizing the threat, the officer retreated and armed himself with a rifle from his police car. Within seconds, Crooks began firing at Trump, leading to immediate action by the police and Secret Service agents, who swiftly pulled Trump to safety.
Tense footage reveals officers attempting to locate Crooks, describing him as a long-haired individual wearing glasses, carrying a backpack, and armed with an AR-style rifle. Unfortunately, by the time additional officers accessed the rooftop, Crooks had been neutralized by a counter-sniper from the Secret Service.
Besides the video documentation, the incident sparked a flurry of communication among officers, with one captured asking, “Were you on the same frequency?” — a reference to their coordination efforts via police radio. Their challenges were further compounded as one officer expressed his disbelief and anger over the absence of a security post on the pivotal rooftop.
In the aftermath, the Secret Service acknowledged the incident as a failure in their protective details and pledged a thorough review and update of their policies and procedures. Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi emphasized the bravery of local law enforcement and affirmed their critical role in the day’s events.
The shooting has prompted a broader investigation, involving the FBI and a bipartisan House panel of 13 lawmakers, meant to dissect the events and prevent such occurrences in the future.
This incident, captured in stark detail by police footage, underscores the intricate and perilous nature of protective operations during significant public events and has led to calls for enhanced security measures and better inter-agency communication.
