Public accounts agree that Tyler Sieber was shot after two vehicles stopped, but some details of the preceding collision remain unsettled.
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Detectives investigating the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Tyler Sieber are working to establish how a collision on Interstate 285 developed into an armed confrontation between drivers.
The shooting happened late July 23 along I-285 near the Buford Highway and Chamblee-Tucker Road exits. Police said a driver shot Sieber after the vehicles stopped and then fled. No arrest or public suspect description had been announced as of Sunday.
Early reporting based on information from investigators said another vehicle struck Sieber’s vehicle and that Sieber followed it before rear-ending the other vehicle. Police said both drivers then got out and the other driver opened fire.
Sieber’s family later described a different starting point. His father, Anton Sieber, said Tyler was driving a separate vehicle behind him when another motorist moved between their vehicles, struck the rear of the father’s truck and caused it to spin across traffic.
Anton Sieber said his son first checked on him and then followed the departing vehicle to photograph it and gather identifying information. The family said the vehicles stopped and Tyler Sieber approached the other driver before an argument began.
Both versions agree on the central elements now under investigation: A traffic collision occurred, the drivers stopped, a confrontation followed and another driver shot Sieber before leaving the area. Authorities have not issued a detailed public chronology that resolves the differences between the early police account and the family’s description.
The distinction could be important to investigators as they review physical evidence, vehicle damage and any available recordings. Police have not said whether they recovered traffic camera video, business surveillance footage or dash camera recordings showing the events.
Family members said the person who fled also took Tyler Sieber’s phone. Anton Sieber said they tracked the phone until its signal disappeared and later found its case. Another account provided by the family said the phone was damaged and pieces were scattered. Police have not publicly confirmed what was recovered or whether the device contained usable images.
The absence of a publicly released vehicle description has limited the information available to motorists who may have witnessed the encounter. Anton Sieber said the road was dark, his view of the driver was brief and the other vehicle had tinted windows.
The family has appealed for video from motorists who were on I-285 around the time of the shooting. Recordings made before or after the confrontation could help investigators identify the vehicle, trace its route or confirm the sequence of the crashes.
Relatives remembered Tyler Sieber as protective of his family. His mother, Christa Sieber, said he acted because he had seen his father placed in danger. His sister, Brittney Sieber, described him as a generous brother who shared his interests and supported her whenever she needed him.
DeKalb County police have not disclosed whether investigators have identified a person of interest. The case remains open, and authorities are seeking information and recordings from witnesses who traveled through the interchange on the night of July 23.
