Port Hardy, British Columbia – After a surge in overdose deaths, law enforcement in Port Hardy has taken decisive action to address the drug crisis plaguing the area. In a coordinated effort, the RCMP, with support from the Island District RCMP General Investigation Section and Port Alice RCMP, launched an operation in early March to combat the local drug trade.
On March 9th, six individuals were arrested, and two search warrants were executed at locations within Port Hardy. The searches resulted in the seizure of significant quantities of suspected Fentanyl, crack cocaine, and cocaine, as well as the discovery of a handgun and a shotgun.
Chief Superintendent Shawna Baher, Island District RCMP Commander, emphasized the RCMP’s commitment to supporting the Port Hardy community and neighboring Indigenous communities in reducing overdose deaths. The authorities are working closely with law enforcement partners to ascertain the role of the arrested individuals in the drug trade and ensure public safety through proper prosecution.
A thorough report will be submitted to the Crown Counsel for the consideration of charges against those detained in connection with the investigation. Additionally, the RCMP plans to maintain a heightened police presence in the future, with assistance from the BC Highway Patrol and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia (CFSEU-BC).
