PHNOM PENH, Cambodia – A tragic accident occurred beneath the Russey Keo flyover in Phnom Penh, claiming the lives of four individuals and injuring four others. The devastating incident took place around 6:40 pm on January 20, 2024.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported heavy traffic congestion at the intersection under the Russey Keo flyover, with multiple vehicles coming to a stop at the traffic light. A white pick-up truck descended from the bridge and collided with a motorcycle and several other vehicles, resulting in the loss of four lives, including three females and one male motorcyclist, and causing minor injuries to four individuals who were promptly transported to Calmette Hospital for treatment.
The driver of the pick-up truck was swiftly arrested at the scene and taken to Russey Keo police station for further questioning. Initial investigations revealed that the driver’s blood alcohol content exceeded the legal limit, indicating a violation of drunk driving regulations.
In the aftermath of the accident, the Phnom Penh Municipal Police’s land traffic division evaluated and secured the motorcycles involved in the collision. The deceased individuals were then released to their families for traditional burial ceremonies.
The tragic events have highlighted the importance of enforcing traffic regulations and the severe consequences of drunk driving. Authorities are urging motorists to prioritize road safety and to refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol to prevent similar heartbreaking incidents in the future.
