Edmonton, Alberta — As motorcycle enthusiasts prepare for the riding season, local officials are sounding an alarm about road safety amid a troubling rise in fatalities and serious injuries. This year has already seen three deaths and numerous severe injuries involving motorcyclists, prompting the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) to emphasize the need for caution.
Sgt. Kerry Bates of the EPS traffic safety unit highlighted the alarming reality that even seasoned riders can underestimate challenging road conditions. “A little extra caution can save lives,” he stated, urging all motorcyclists to exercise heightened awareness while navigating the streets.
Motorcyclists are being reminded to stay vigilant and adopt defensive riding practices. They should be on the lookout for common hazards such as loose gravel, uneven surfaces, and potholes that can pose significant risks. Proper protective gear—helmets, jackets, gloves, and boots—is also essential for enhancing rider safety.
“Being a motorcyclist requires constant vigilance,” Bates advised. “You must always be aware of your surroundings, watching for other vehicles that may not see you. It’s crucial to scan the road ahead, anticipate potential hazards, and hone your skills in slow-speed maneuvers and emergency stops.”
In addition to advising motorcyclists, police are calling on all drivers to remain attentive to riders. With an increasing number of motorcycles on the roads, it’s essential for everyone to share the space responsibly.
Recent statistics reveal a worrisome trend in motorcycle-related collisions in the city. Data shows a consistent rise in both fatalities and serious injuries over the past few years. In 2020, there were two fatalities and nine serious injuries; in 2021, the numbers remained consistent at two fatalities and ten serious injuries. The year 2022 saw one fatality but a stark increase in serious injuries to twenty. Alarmingly, the current year has already matched the total number of deaths from the previous year, with three fatalities and twenty-one serious injuries reported thus far. If this trend continues, 2024 may see even higher casualties, with projections indicating a dramatic rise.
As the riding season unfolds, both the Edmonton Police Service and safety advocates are urging all road users to prioritize safety.
