Elder Voice Advocates Launch ‘Elder Care IQ’ to Track Neglect in Minnesota Care Facilities Amid Rising Death Reports

Minneapolis, MN — Elder Voice Advocates, a watchdog group focused on elder care, has released a tool called Elder Care IQ, aimed at highlighting neglect in Minnesota’s long-term care facilities. This year alone, the group has tracked 50 cases of neglect, including 26 resulting in deaths, underscoring an ongoing issue within the state’s elder care system.

Kristine Sundberg, president of Elder Voice Advocates, emphasized the pertinence of the tool, stating, “It’s happening all the time. That’s why we’re working hard to get our analytics improved. Without transparency or accountability, how can we do anything about it?” This innovative tracker is available without charge and provides data intended to drive reform through greater transparency and accountability.

Historically, Minnesota has struggled with data collection related to elder care neglect. A report in 2018 by the Office of the Legislative Auditor pointed out significant gaps in the state’s approach. It criticized the Minnesota Department of Health’s Office of Health Facility Complaints for not collecting adequate information that could help mitigate elder maltreatment. The report underscored the necessity for comprehensive data that outlines the frequency, location, and trends associated with elder maltreatment, such as staffing levels and the timing of incidents.

One primary recommendation was for legislative action to mandate that this office publicly post all recent investigation reports on its website and to enhance the searchability of these reports. While not all recommendations have been implemented to date, some improvements have been made, according to Garry Bowman, a spokesperson for the Health Department. He noted that the department’s health regulation division has acted on several suggestions from the auditor’s office to rectify these deficiencies.

Despite these efforts, the Health Department still does not provide a summary of maltreatment-related deaths. This lack of comprehensive public reporting continues to raise concerns about transparency and the state’s capacity to protect its vulnerable elderly population from neglect and abuse.

Elder Care IQ aims to fill this information void by offering a platform that not only tracks reported cases but also synthesizes data to provide a clearer picture of the scope and specifics of neglect. Elder Voice Advocates hopes this tool will not only inform the public and stakeholders but also spur legislative and institutional changes.

Reflecting on the dire statistics and the loss of life, the need for action is palpable. As efforts continue to improve the system, Elder Voice Advocates along with other stakeholders, is pushing for a more robust framework to safeguard the rights and well-being of the elderly in care facilities across Minnesota.

The initiative by Elder Voice Advocates represents a critical step toward systemic change, highlighting the power of data in combating elder neglect and fostering an environment where the elderly can receive the care and respect they deserve.
