PORTLAND, OR – In a case that has gripped the city, the body of an 80-year-old woman was discovered in a suitcase along the banks of Sauvie Island. Known to her family as Lead Da, the woman was beloved for her vivacity and youthful spirit, traits that made her untimely death all the more shocking.
The woman’s daughter, Kayla Five Coats, recalls her mother as someone who embraced life with enthusiasm and had no plans of slowing down anytime soon. “She was always full of ideas and things she wanted to do,” Kayla reminisced, her voice tinged with sadness.
The news of her mother’s death was delivered by detectives who arrived at Kayla’s home, leaving her in disbelief. The circumstances of her mother’s passing were not immediately disclosed, leaving Kayla to piece together the tragic story from a public release. Her mother’s remains had been found in a suitcase, a fact that was both distressing and infuriating for Kayla.
Kayla was particularly upset about how she was informed of the details. “It was like reliving the nightmare all over again,” she shared, describing the moment she read her mother’s death certificate and learned about the suffering she endured before her death.
Despite her mother’s tendency to trust easily, Kayla insists that she was undeserving of the fate that befell her. Lead Da, Kayla explained, had a habit of surrounding herself with people who didn’t always have her best interests at heart. “She was too kind to those who didn’t deserve it,” Kayla said.
Lead Da had recently sold her home in the St. John’s neighborhood, a decision Kayla believes may have attracted unwanted attention. She fears her mother’s financial dealings could have been a motive for those involved in the crime.
As the case progresses, Kayla is committed to seeking justice. The suspect in the case has been charged with murder and abuse of a corpse, with a trial date set for April 14. Kayla hopes the trial will bring accountability and closure for her family.
In the wake of her mother’s death, Kayla cherishes the memories they shared, drawing comfort from the life lessons her mother imparted. “She was always teaching me something new,” Kayla recalled fondly.
The community stands with Kayla, united in their hope for justice and healing.
