New Delhi, India — Medical professionals are pushing back against claims linking COVID-19 vaccines to a recent increase in heart attack-related fatalities. The response comes after Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah pointed out more than twenty deaths connected to heart attacks in Hassan district over the past month.
Dr. Mohit Gupta, a cardiology professor at GB Pant Hospital, emphasized findings from a recent study involving 1,600 heart attack patients. He noted the study revealed that vaccinated individuals had better health outcomes compared to those who were unvaccinated. “Our research shows that those who received the vaccine not only experienced lower rates of heart attacks but also had reduced all-cause mortality and sudden death rates,” Dr. Gupta stated.
The professor elaborated further, explaining that a significant reduction in death rates was observed during follow-ups conducted at 30 days and six months post-vaccination. He asserted that the COVID-19 vaccines pose no harm and, conversely, provide crucial protection against severe health issues. “This is corroborated by studies from other institutions, including the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and multiple hospitals across the nation,” he added.
Dr. Gupta dismissed the correlation between cardiac deaths and the vaccines as unfounded speculation. “If vaccines were at fault, we would see a widespread pattern of reports across various locations, rather than isolated incidents. The recent spike in reported cases is not supported by scientific evidence,” he stated.
Echoing Dr. Gupta’s sentiments, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Executive Chairperson of Biocon Limited, contested the chief minister’s assertions. She remarked that suggesting a direct link between the vaccine and the number of heart attack deaths within the month is misleading. The chief minister’s comments came amid ongoing concerns over public health safety following a series of sudden deaths in younger individuals.
To investigate the alarming trend further, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has appointed a committee of experts, led by Dr. Ravindranath, Director of the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research. The committee has been directed to analyze the causes behind the heart attacks and to provide a comprehensive report within ten days.
In a related development, the Union Health Ministry released a statement on July 2 indicating that extensive studies by the ICMR and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) have found no causal link between COVID-19 vaccinations and sudden deaths reported across the country.
As experts continue to evaluate potential health risks, they stress the importance of relying on scientific data rather than unverified claims. The ongoing discussions underscore the need for a cautious approach to public health communication, especially in the face of a pandemic.
