FORT WORTH, Texas – A terrifying experience unfolded at the Sandman Signature Hotel in downtown Fort Worth, as a woman called 911 in a panic immediately after an explosion. The woman, stuck in an elevator filled with smoke, pleaded for help and instructed someone with her to cover their face with a shirt to filter out the smoke. With the elevator doors appearing to open, the woman urged someone to head for the stairs, ultimately making it out of the elevator.
Scot and Angela Cockroft, among the first to call 911, were headed back to their hotel room when they experienced the explosion that caused the elevator to stall. They managed to force their way out and escape through the emergency stairwell, suffering from lung and throat irritation, but thankfully avoiding any serious injuries.
This incident sparked over 10 calls to 911, with witnesses expressing panic as they described seeing or hearing the explosion from a distance. The situation prompted confusion among dispatchers, as they initially struggled to comprehend the extent of the incident and the number of calls coming in about the same explosion.
The blast, believed to have originated in the hotel’s basement floor where the Musume restaurant is located, injured 21 people and scattered debris and building pieces into the downtown streets. Although natural gas was indicated to be involved in the explosion, its official cause has yet to be determined.
The release of the 911 audio provides a chilling insight into the fear and confusion that engulfed the area in the aftermath of the explosion, leaving the community in shock and authorities working diligently to ascertain the cause behind this devastating incident.
