Fort Worth, Texas – A suspected natural gas explosion at the W.T. Waggoner Building, which was recently transformed into the Sandman Signature Fort Worth Hotel, resulted in at least 21 injuries.
The explosion, which occurred at about 3:30 p.m. on Monday, blew out parts of the hotel’s facade, causing visible damage along 8th Street and into a nearby parking lot. Officials have not yet confirmed the cause, but the ATF and Fort Worth Fire Department suspect a natural gas leak.
The Fort Worth Fire Department is leading the investigation, noting that ongoing construction in the building likely contributed to the explosion. A two-block area in downtown Fort Worth has been evacuated due to the persistent smell of natural gas.
As of late Monday afternoon, the number of injured increased to 21, with one person critically injured, four seriously injured, and the remaining injuries being minor. There have been no fatalities reported, and search and rescue efforts are ongoing to ensure no one is trapped.
The Sandman Signature Fort Worth Hotel, along with surrounding buildings, has been closed for the day, and Atmos Energy is working with authorities to turn off the gas supply. The American Red Cross has set up a family reunification center for those affected by the explosion.
The W.T. Waggoner Building, a historic 20-story structure, has a long-standing history before being remodeled into the Sandman Signature Fort Worth Hotel in 2019. The ATF and Texas Railroad Commission are on the scene assisting with the investigation.
The hotel’s management has expressed support for injured individuals and is cooperating with authorities to determine the cause and extent of the explosion. At this time, the focus remains on the well-being of the victims and the ongoing investigation into the incident.
This is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
