SANDERSVILLE, Ga. — The poignant scent of wood chips lingers in Dante Holsey’s mind, a trigger for memories of his son, Dontavious “Tay” Holsey, who was full of life and ambition. Tay would come home from long shifts at Georgia Pacific, the fragrance of his work clinging to him, and embrace his younger sister with the warmth of brotherly affection. Those everyday moments are now bittersweet for a family grappling with the void left by his tragic death.
On Sept. 30, 2023, the 23-year-old was shot near an intersection in east Macon, a violent end to a promising life. Authorities have arrested two individuals in connection with the shooting: 18-year-old Devin DeLoach and 20-year-old Davian Forney, who are both facing serious charges. However, their release on bond has compounded the family’s grief, leaving them devastated and yearning for justice.
“My son was brutally taken from us,” Dante Holsey said, expressing his frustration with the justice system. The loss of Tay has shaken the core of their family, which had already endured the loss of its matriarch nearly a decade ago. “We were starting to rebuild our lives, and now we face this unbearable pain all over again.”
Tay, described by his family as driven and kind-hearted, had dreams beyond his job at Georgia Pacific. He was in the process of launching his own clothing line, MIP — or “Money Is Poison.” With designs nearly complete, Tay was juggling multiple responsibilities, including work and entrepreneurship. His brothers, Damonte and Samere, remember a supportive sibling who always encouraged them, and helped guide their paths.
“To us, he was the big brother who protected us and taught us right from wrong,” Samere Holsey recounted. “His influence is something that will always stay with me.” In many ways, Tay was a role model, not just a sibling. But their once hopeful family dynamic has been irrevocably altered.
According to Dante Holsey, Tay was confronted by his assailants during a meeting arranged through acquaintances, where he was robbed at gunpoint. The situation turned deadly when the suspects opened fire. Holsey was found unresponsive at the scene and later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, leaving behind a devastated family and a community in shock.
As the anniversary of his death approaches, the Holsey family is determined to remember Tay as a vibrant force, not merely a victim of violence. “He was more than just a statistic; he was loved deeply,” Dante said. “He was a regular young man trying to find his way in this world.”
The family struggles with a new reality where justice feels delayed. The release of the accused men adds an extra layer of anguish, as the family grapples with the complexities of grief. “Whenever I try to process my feelings, I just think about them walking around free,” Damonte shared.
Nonetheless, in the face of overwhelming sorrow, Dante remains steadfast, drawing strength from his surviving children. “My focus is on them now,” he said, emphasizing the importance of family bonds during such trying times. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate, aiming to bring closure to a family torn apart by loss.
