Kissimmee, Florida — A heated argument over a food order turned deadly at a local Checkers restaurant on Wednesday night, resulting in a shooting that claimed the life of a customer. The incident occurred around 10:10 p.m. at the establishment located on W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway, prompting a swift response from deputies with the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.
Upon arrival, authorities found Wesley Robertson, the customer involved in the dispute, critically injured. Investigators later learned that the altercation had begun between Robertson and an employee, 23-year-old Elijah Travis Mackey. Surveillance footage from the restaurant revealed Mackey exiting the drive-thru window before approaching Robertson at the front of the establishment.
Witnesses reported that the argument escalated after Robertson made a derogatory remark. According to court documents, the confrontation took a violent turn when Mackey brandished a small handgun from his waistband and shot Robertson in the chest. Paramedics rushed the victim to Osceola Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Mackey was taken into custody shortly after the shooting and has been charged with first-degree premeditated murder with a firearm. During an initial court appearance on Friday, the judge denied him bail, setting the stage for further legal proceedings.
In response to the tragic event, Checkers released a statement expressing shock and sadness over the shooting. The spokesperson emphasized that the actions of one employee do not represent the values upheld by the company and its many staff members nationwide. The restaurant stated it is cooperating fully with law enforcement during the ongoing investigation.
The Checkers location reopened the following day, but the incident has left patrons feeling uneasy. Many families visiting nearby hotels for the holiday weekend voiced concerns about safety. One guest, Ray Blake, expressed his apprehension, questioning the security of the area in light of the recent violence.
As the investigation continues, the community grapples with the ramifications of a senseless act that ended in tragedy, sparking discussions about safety in fast-food establishments and public spaces.
