Ypsilanti, Michigan – A tragic accident in Canton Township last week has resulted in the death of a 32-year-old Belleville woman, Desiree Jones. Maurice Griffin, a 37-year-old man from Ypsilanti, is facing serious charges in connection with the fatal crash. Griffin has been charged with second-degree murder, operating a vehicle with a high blood alcohol content level causing death, reckless driving causing death, operating with a suspended or revoked license causing death, and operating while intoxicated, marking his third offense.
During the incident on June 6, Jones was driving a white Chevrolet Malibu along Michigan Avenue near Lilley Road when her vehicle was hit head-on by a red GMC Acadia driven by Griffin. Tragically, Jones succumbed to her injuries at the hospital, while Griffin sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also hospitalized.
Griffin appeared in 36th District Court for arraignment on Saturday and was granted a $1 million cash bond. As the legal proceedings unfold, he is scheduled for a probable cause hearing on June 21 followed by a preliminary examination on June 28.
