Fatal Shooting in Germania: One Dead, Another Arrested After Altercation Over Hunting Land

TOWN OF GERMANIA, Wis. — A shooting incident on Wednesday night left one man dead and resulted in the arrest of another in Shawano County. Authorities received a call shortly after 9:15 p.m. regarding a violent confrontation on Highway M, near Tigerton.

The 911 caller reported that a man had pulled a weapon on his friend and fired shots. While on the line with emergency services, the caller locked himself in a nearby building. As tensions escalated, the initial shooter attempted to gain entry, prompting the caller to discharge his own firearm in the shooter’s direction.

Upon arrival, deputies encountered resistance from the shooter, but were eventually able to take him into custody. The 67-year-old victim, a resident of Greenleaf, was discovered in a garage at the scene. Authorities have not yet released his name pending notification of family members.

The suspect, a 74-year-old man from Clintonville, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital before being booked into the Shawano County Jail. His identity has also been withheld by law enforcement.

Investigators noted that the shooter, the victim, and the caller were all connected through shared ownership of hunting land in the area. The caller was cooperative with deputies, providing a detailed account of the incident, which is still under investigation.

Local officials emphasize the need for community awareness regarding firearms and conflict resolution, especially in rural areas where hunting and outdoor activities are common. The series of events that led to this tragic outcome underscores the potential risks associated with handling firearms in high-stress situations.

The community is now grappling with the shock of the violence, as residents express their concerns over safety and the escalation of disagreements into deadly confrontations. As authorities continue their investigation, they urge anyone with additional information to come forward.
