South Philadelphia, PA – Tragedy struck in South Philadelphia on Tuesday night when a 31-year-old woman was fatally shot in what authorities suspect may have been a domestic dispute. As the events unfolded on the 2300 block of South Marshall Street around 7 p.m., two men were taken into custody in connection with the shooting.
Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small revealed that the 3rd District officers were alerted to the incident after hearing multiple gunshots while on patrol near the scene. Upon arrival, they found the woman lying unresponsive on the sidewalk, suffering from a severe head injury caused by the shooting. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her wounds at Jefferson Hospital.
Following the shooting, surveillance footage from Real Time crime cameras captured two individuals walking in the vicinity before disappearing into a building on Ritner Street. The suspects soon emerged from the building and attempted to flee the scene on foot. After a brief pursuit, the police were able to apprehend both men and recover two semi-automatic handguns.
Inspector Small shared that the victim had been a victim of assault the previous week, resulting in hospitalization and visible facial bruising. A warrant had been issued for the assailant, leading authorities to suspect a potential link between the assault and the fatal shooting. The investigation is ongoing as law enforcement works to determine the motive behind the tragic incident and bring those responsible to justice.
