GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A man stands accused of murdering his fiancée and her two children while leaving his own son unharmed, leading authorities to suspect a cover-up rather than an act of self-defense. Charles Broomfield, 44, allegedly made a frantic 911 call to report the shooting on January 27, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Upon arrival, law enforcement found Broomfield calm and standing next to the body of his fiancée, Jacqueline Neill. Emergency responders discovered her along with her two children, 15-year-old Cameron Kilpatrick and 13-year-old Michael Kilpatrick, who were found deceased in their bedrooms. Notably, Broomfield’s own 5-year-old child was located on the second floor without any injuries.
Broomfield initially relayed to authorities a version of events in which he claimed that two armed intruders burst into the home. He alleged that he rushed upstairs to retrieve a gun, only to hear gunfire coming from the floor below. He insisted that he called 911 after the intruders fled the scene.
However, investigators quickly uncovered inconsistencies in Broomfield’s story. Paramedics determined that Neill and her children had been dead for a minimum of 40 minutes prior to his emergency call, raising questions about his timeline. Furthermore, it was revealed that the firearm he claimed to have taken from his bedroom was located in a lockbox outside the house, which appeared to show signs of a single set of footprints leading to and from it. Intriguingly, the lockbox was discovered to have been opened with a key that bore a “#1 Dad” lanyard.
Following a detailed investigation and after being read his rights, Broomfield reportedly confessed to the crime. Authorities arrested him on three counts of first-degree murder, and he is now facing severe legal repercussions.
