PALMETTO BAY, Fla. — A 47-year-old man was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon inside a Palmetto Bay home, and deputies took his 75-year-old father into custody after investigators said the two had been involved in a domestic dispute.
Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office detectives said the case quickly shifted from a shooting call to a homicide investigation after deputies found the wounded man inside the house and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue pronounced him dead at the scene. The shooting rattled neighbors in a quiet residential area and put new attention on earlier mental health-related calls to the same home, even as investigators said the violence appeared to be isolated and posed no threat to the wider community.
Deputies were sent to the area of Southwest 168th Street and Southwest 92nd Avenue at about 4:49 p.m. after a report of a dispute and a man who had been shot. According to the sheriff’s office, the first deputies on scene encountered one man at the residence and detained him right away. As they cleared the home, they found another adult man with what investigators described as an apparent gunshot wound. He was later identified by authorities as the detained man’s son. MDSO spokesperson Argemis Colome said the basic facts were clear early on. “The individual that was shot and deceased on the scene is the son,” Colome said, adding that the shooter was the father, who was detained immediately when deputies arrived.
Investigators have not publicly released the names of either man, but they said the father is 75 and the son was 47. The sheriff’s office has not said how many shots were fired, what weapon was used or what led up to the confrontation inside the home. Officials also have not released an arrest affidavit or announced formal charges in the public statements available Wednesday night. What law enforcement did say was that the shooting happened in the middle of a family dispute, not a random act of violence. That point mattered in the neighborhood, where residents stepped outside to find patrol cars, detectives and crime scene tape blocking off part of the street.
The case also carries a broader context because deputies said they had been called to the residence before for mental health-related incidents. Colome did not describe those earlier calls in detail, and authorities have not released records showing when they happened or who was involved. Still, that history became one of the few clues investigators shared as they worked to explain how the argument turned deadly. Neighbors said the area is usually calm and that the heavy police presence stood out. Giorgos Kollilekas, who lives nearby, said the sight of so many deputies was jarring in a place where police activity is uncommon and families generally expect the street to stay quiet.
By late Wednesday, the father remained in custody while homicide detectives continued interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence. WSVN reported that charges were still pending and that the man was expected to appear before a judge Thursday, though no formal court record was included in the initial public releases. The sheriff’s office press release listed the case as a homicide investigation and said the inquiry was continuing. That leaves several immediate questions unresolved, including whether prosecutors will file a murder charge, whether the father will claim self-defense and what evidence from inside the home will shape the case once investigators finish reviewing the scene.
For neighbors, the facts released so far were enough to leave a deep sense of shock. “We usually feel really safe here, so something like that happening is concerning,” Kollilekas said. Colome also called the shooting a family tragedy, saying, “This is a father and son domestic situation. It’s not a good day for that family.” The sheriff’s office said the community itself was not in danger, but the combination of a fatal shooting, a father in custody and a history of prior calls to the same address gave the case unusual weight even before authorities identified either man publicly.
The investigation remained open Thursday, with the father in custody, the victim’s name still unreleased in public statements and detectives working toward the next court and charging decisions.
