Sheriff’s officials said investigators are reviewing what led to the early morning family disturbance.
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A father died Tuesday after Harris County deputies found him unresponsive in a chokehold held by his teenage son at a west Harris County home, sheriff’s officials said.
Deputies were called about 3:43 a.m. to the 21400 block of Sagrantino Court, near Clay and North Mason roads, after a family disturbance was reported. The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Officials had not released his name by late Tuesday morning.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said deputies found the man being held by his son when they arrived. The son was believed to be 15 years old, officials said. Crime scene investigators and homicide detectives were sent to the home to determine what happened before deputies arrived and whether any criminal case would be filed.
Maj. Ben Katrib of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the man’s estranged wife told investigators he had been banging on the door before entering the home. The woman, three teenagers and another adult man were inside at the time. Katrib said the father had recently returned from out of town and had been at the home the day before.
Investigators said a fight between the two adult men moved into the front yard. At some point, the teenager placed his father in a chokehold and held him until deputies arrived. Deputies gave aid until emergency medical crews reached the scene. The cause of death had not been determined.
Two adults were detained but had not been formally arrested, sheriff’s officials said. Katrib said the case could be presented to the juvenile division of the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. Officials said they were still reviewing witness statements, the family timeline and evidence from the home.
No prior calls for service tied to the family had been reported at the property, Katrib said. Investigators also said there was no active threat to the public. Authorities had not said whether the teenager, either adult or anyone else would face charges.
The investigation remained open Tuesday as homicide detectives awaited more findings, including the medical examiner’s ruling on the man’s cause and manner of death.
