Father of Abundant Life School Shooter Faces Serious Charges, Out on Bond Ahead of Preliminary Hearing

MADISON, Wis. — The father of a teenage girl who tragically fatally shot two individuals at Abundant Life Christian School last year has been released on bond. Jeffrey Rupnow, 40, faces serious charges, including selling firearms to a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a child. Bond was set at $20,000 by a court commissioner on Friday, and Rupnow has already made a portion of this payment.

His daughter, the alleged shooter, caused the deaths of teacher Erin West and student Rubi Patricia Vergara on December 16, 2024. In addition, six others were injured during the incident, with one victim remaining in critical condition as of Thursday. Following the shooting, the 15-year-old perpetrator took her own life.

Court documents reveal that Rupnow is required to wear a GPS monitoring device and is prohibited from making contact with anyone affiliated with Abundant Life Christian School. He must also stay clear of the location of the school on East Buckeye Road and is banned from possessing firearms. Authorities have indicated that Rupnow was aware of his daughter’s mental health challenges and troubling behavior, yet he allegedly provided her with access to dangerous weapons.

Rupnow is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on June 9, where further details regarding the charges and the circumstances surrounding this harrowing event will likely be explored. The case has raised significant concerns about gun access and responsibility, particularly regarding minors and those struggling with mental health issues.

As communities grapple with the fallout from school shootings, this incident has ignited discussions on the need for stronger regulations regarding firearm access for minors. The tragedy at Abundant Life Christian School serves as a poignant reminder of the critical intersection between mental health awareness and gun safety.

Authorities continue to investigate the broader implications of this case, as parents, educators, and lawmakers express calls for action and reform. The community mourning the loss of its beloved teacher and student now faces larger questions about safety and accountability in the context of youth violence.
