Madison, Wis. — The father of a teenager who carried out a deadly shooting at Abundant Life Christian School has been arrested on multiple felony charges. Jeffrey Rupnow, 42, was taken into custody early Thursday morning, about five months after his daughter, Natalie Rupnow, opened fire at the school, resulting in the deaths of a teacher and a fellow student before taking her own life.
Authorities charged Jeffrey Rupnow with contributing to the delinquency of a child and two counts of providing dangerous weapons to a minor, resulting in death. Investigators allege that he supplied the firearms used in the tragic incident. According to law enforcement, while there was a gun safe in the home, it did not prevent the 15-year-old from accessing the firearms.
Madison Police Chief John Patterson described the investigation as thorough and intricate, explaining that obtaining enough evidence to file charges took time. The court documents reveal a manifesto titled “War Against Humanity” discovered in Natalie’s bedroom, which indicated a preoccupation with violence and weapons. She reportedly communicated with individuals online about these themes, raising concerns among investigators.
The tragic shooting occurred in December, claiming the lives of 42-year-old Erin West, a teacher, and 14-year-old Rubi Vergara. Six additional students were injured, with one remaining hospitalized. Authorities noted that Natalie had a fascination with firearms, which she developed after spending time at a friend’s farm where she first shot a gun.
Inside the school on the day of the shooting, investigators found two weapons. One was used in the attack, while the other was recovered but not fired. Both guns had been legally purchased by Jeffrey Rupnow in Dane County. Patterson confirmed that additional firearms were uncovered during a search of the family’s residence.
In an affidavit, Rupnow’s father told police that Natalie had expressed an interest in shooting and had requested visits to shooting ranges after her initial exposure. It remains unclear why there was a five-month delay in making an arrest following the tragic events.
