Fayetteville Woman Indicted for Allegedly Murdering Green Beret Husband Amid Divorce Turmoil

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A woman has been indicted by a grand jury in Cumberland County for allegedly murdering her Green Beret husband, Clint Bonnell, whose remains were found in a pond. The investigation began after concerns arose when Bonnell did not attend classes at Methodist University, prompting wellness checks by both university staff and his girlfriend.

Authorities reported that Bonnell had communicated his intentions to seek a divorce from his wife, Shana Cloud, just days before his disappearance. During the preliminary investigation, deputies discovered Bonnell’s vehicle parked at their home, along with personal items such as his car keys and a school book bag. Despite Cloud’s statement that her husband had not returned home, records indicated that Bonnell had indeed gone back to the residence that night without leaving afterward.

The gruesome discovery of Bonnell’s torso shortly afterward raised alarms. Due to the condition of the remains, North Carolina’s Medical Examiner’s Office had to utilize DNA analysis to confirm the identity of the victim, sending samples to the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System for cross-referencing with Bonnell’s existing DNA profile in their database.

Cumberland County District Attorney Billy West has suggested that Bonnell’s intent to end his marriage may have served as a motive for the alleged crime. Reports indicated that just before he went missing, Bonnell had consulted a lawyer about divorce proceedings and had informed his girlfriend of his decision to separate from Cloud.

Following the discovery of Bonnell’s remains, a legal dispute emerged surrounding his estate, which included their home, two vehicles, and a checking account. The ongoing case has added complexity to an already tragic situation, particularly as Cloud faced arraignment for the murder, during which the lawsuit regarding Bonnell’s assets was dropped.

While the investigation continues, the case has drawn significant public attention, underscoring the complexities of relationships and the dire consequences that can arise from domestic disputes. As authorities gather more evidence, the local community remains shaken by the violent turn of events involving a well-known service member enrolled in a demanding academic program.
