Kwali, Nigeria — Authorities in the Federal Capital Territory have thwarted a potential terror attack following an intelligence-driven operation that resulted in the deaths of three armed criminals. The police command executed a coordinated raid on a hideout linked to the gang, responding to reports that they had been planning a significant assault on local communities.
The police operation was initiated after intelligence indicated that the bandits aimed to execute their plans on or before December 1. Commissioner of Police Miller Dantawaye ordered the Anti-Kidnapping Unit to ramp up efforts to track the group’s movements and dismantle their operations.
In a statement, the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, detailed the police’s proactive approach to preventing the impending attack. The police were reinforced by reports of recent kidnappings in the ACO Community as well as incidents in Gwagwalada and Bwari, escalating the urgency of their mission.
On November 30, officers located and apprehended a key suspect, identified as Sani Mohammed Umar, who is also known as Boko. The police seized his phone, believed to be instrumental in coordinating the gang’s criminal activities. During questioning, Umar confirmed his involvement in numerous kidnappings within the region and disclosed that his accomplices were gathered at Gada Biyu Hills, ready to attack.
Later that evening, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit engaged the gang after pinpointing their location in the forest. A tactical ambush ensued, leading to a fierce clash that lasted approximately 30 minutes. While three gang members were killed during the encounter, others reportedly fled with injuries.
To further secure the area, a joint operation is underway involving police and troops from the Nigerian Army’s 176 Battalion. Together, they are scouring forested areas and securing escape routes. Medical facilities have been alerted to look out for individuals seeking treatment for gunshot wounds, ensuring a rapid response to any fleeing suspects.
The Commissioner praised the bravery and skill demonstrated by his officers and expressed gratitude for the community’s assistance in providing timely intelligence. He urged residents to remain vigilant and continue sharing information that could aid the police in preventing violence.
Authorities confiscated multiple firearms during the operation, including three AK-47 rifles along with ammunition, underscoring the sophistication and danger of the criminal syndicate they are facing.
