FDA Investigates Two Fatalities and Multiple Illnesses Tied to Diamond Shruumz Microdosing Products; Nationwide Recall Issued

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is currently probing links between products from Diamond Shruumz and two reported deaths, alongside a spate of illnesses nationwide. The inquiry follows a recall by the company of its microdosing chocolate bars, infused cones, and gummies, after reports emerged of severe health reactions among consumers.

Diamond Shruumz, a subsidiary of Prophet Premium Blends, initiated the recall in June after these health incidents first came to light. To date, the FDA has recorded 74 cases of illness in 28 states related to these products. Many of those affected have sought medical treatment, with 38 hospitalizations noted and two fatalities under investigation.

Of particular concern is the presence of muscimol, a psychoactive compound found in the Amanita muscaria mushroom, which is suggested to be linked to the symptoms reported. The FDA has indicated that muscimol can induce effects like those observed in the affected individuals, which include seizures, depressive symptoms of the central nervous system, abnormal heart rates, and severe nausea.

These health scares have occurred in the broader context of the growing trend of microdosing, where small amounts of psychedelic substances are consumed purportedly to enhance mental health and creativity. A related FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) investigation discovered the presence of psilocin, derived from psychedelic mushrooms, in some of Diamond Shruumz’s gummies. This substance is classified as Schedule 1 under Virginia law, where some of the gummies were tested.

Amid these findings, a CDC report from July also brought attention to the potential dangers of inaccurately labeled psychedelic products, warning consumers of the unexpected and potentially toxic effects these might contain. This comes as the practice of microdosing gains traction, particularly among high-profile individuals in industries like technology, where enhancement of creativity and productivity is highly valued.

Reacting to the FDA’s findings and ongoing investigation, Diamond Shruumz has urged consumers to refrain from using its products while the investigation continues. In its public statements, the company emphasizes its commitment to customer safety and cooperation with the FDA to ascertain the precise cause of the adverse reactions.

This incident underscores the complexities and risks associated with the production and consumption of microdose products containing psychoactive substances. It highlights a growing regulatory challenge as these products gain popularity and circulate more widely in markets across the United States.

The FDA maintains that it will keep the public informed as new information emerges about the links between Diamond Shruumz’s products and the reported adverse health effects. Representatives for Diamond Shruumz were not immediately available for comment regarding the ongoing situation.

As the investigation continues, health officials remind consumers to exercise caution with products purporting therapeutic or enhancing benefits, advising thorough scrutiny of product labels and immediate consultation with health professionals if adverse effects occur.
