REDLANDS, Calif. — A tragic incident at a nudist resort in Southern California has led to the arrest of a 62-year-old man accused of murdering a couple over what investigators describe as a bizarre dispute involving a hot dog. Michael Royce Sparks faces two counts of murder linked to the deaths of Stephanie Menard, 73, and her husband, Daniel Menard, 79.
Authorities report that the couple, residents of Olive Dell Ranch, were last seen on August 24, 2024, when they were reported missing from the nudist community in Redlands. Their remains were discovered in bags concealed within a concrete bunker at Sparks’s residence.
During a recent court hearing, a police detective revealed that Sparks allegedly confessed to a fellow inmate about the killings, stating that the incident escalated following a seemingly innocuous gift of a hot dog from Daniel Menard. Sparks purportedly believed this gesture was a belittling affront, which triggered a violent confrontation: “He said Mr. Sparks felt that the hot dog was a jab at him, making him feel like he was worth only a dollar hot dog,” Detective Thomas Williams testified.
The nature of the alleged crimes reflects a history of escalating tensions between Sparks and the Menards, rooted in a long-standing feud.
