Police said a man was wounded during the breakfast rush and a suspect was quickly taken into custody.
SNELLVILLE, Ga. — An argument between two men waiting to order breakfast at a Chick-fil-A in Snellville turned into a shooting Tuesday morning, leaving one person wounded and sending workers and customers scrambling during one of the restaurant’s busiest hours.
Police said the gunfire broke out around 8:20 a.m. at the Chick-fil-A on Scenic Highway as employees handled the morning rush. Investigators said the two men did not know each other before the confrontation, and the sudden violence shook a dining room filled with staff and patrons.
Detective Jeff Manley of the Snellville Police Department said the dispute began in line near the cash registers. According to Manley, the victim struck the other man during the altercation, and the suspect then pulled a gun and fired several times. Officers said the wounded man was hit once. Authorities have not released his name, but police said Tuesday that he was in stable condition.
Investigators said at least 20 employees were inside the restaurant when the shooting happened, along with several customers. Managers told local television station WSB-TV later in the day that workers were safe but badly shaken by what they had witnessed. Police have not said how many shots were fired, whether anyone else suffered minor injuries in the rush to get away, or what exactly sparked the argument inside the line.
Police arrested 44-year-old Jamaal Andre Jenkins after the shooting. Authorities said Jenkins faces charges of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and reckless conduct tied to firing a weapon inside a crowded building. Court records and additional details about any first appearance were not immediately outlined in the initial public updates Tuesday.
The restaurant closed for the rest of the day after the shooting. Chick-fil-A said the safety of its team members and guests remained its top priority. By Tuesday evening, authorities said there was no ongoing threat to the public. The restaurant planned to reopen at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, a sign that the crime scene had been cleared even as detectives continued reviewing what happened inside the dining area.
The case remained under investigation Tuesday night, with police still working to pin down the full sequence of events and any remaining witness accounts.
