Florida mom killed two kids in violent murder-suicide

Investigators say the deaths followed a welfare check request from the children’s father overseas.

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. — A Florida mother killed her two children and then took her own life inside the family’s home, sheriff’s officials said, after deputies were sent to the residence for a welfare check on the night of Feb. 26.

Detectives with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office said the deaths were a double homicide followed by a suicide, with the two children killed in separate rooms before their mother died in another room. Officials described the scene as violent and said the investigation is focused on how the family’s final hours unfolded and what led to the killings. The district medical examiner is expected to issue official causes and manners of death.

Deputies went to a home in the 8200 block of Pavia Way at about 8:30 p.m. Feb. 26 after the homeowner, identified by officials as the children’s father, asked authorities to check on his family. The man was out of town in South America and had been unable to reach his wife or the children, sheriff’s officials said. When deputies arrived, they noticed circumstances from outside that prompted them to enter the house rather than wait for someone to answer the door. Inside, they found three people dead in separate rooms.

The sheriff’s office said the victims were the homeowner’s 44-year-old wife, 14-year-old son and 11-year-old daughter. All three had traumatic injuries, officials said. Investigators later identified the mother as Monika Rubacha and the children as Josh James, 14, and Emma James, 11. Randy Warren, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said investigators were confident they had accounted for everyone involved and that no one else entered or left the home during the time surrounding the deaths.

Detectives with the Manatee Homicide Investigation Unit concluded the mother killed both children in separate rooms before taking her own life, the sheriff’s office said in an update. Officials said there was no evidence that any other person was involved. Warren told local media that deputies had never been called to that address before and that investigators found no prior incidents tied to the home. “There’s really nothing there that would have indicated this would have happened,” he said, adding that the deaths left first responders facing a disturbing scene.

Authorities have not publicly identified a motive. Warren said investigators did not yet know what was in the mother’s frame of mind and would not describe the method of death while the medical examiner’s work is pending. He also declined to confirm whether the mother left a note. Still, Warren said investigators found evidence suggesting the attack was not impulsive. He said there were indications of planning, describing the evidence as showing the mother “knew what she was doing,” while emphasizing that detectives were still reviewing records and circumstances leading up to the killings.

The sheriff’s office said the family had moved to the Lakewood Ranch area from Missouri about three years ago. Investigators said they were continuing to process the home, document the scene, and review evidence that could include digital communications and recent movements. Officials also said the deaths did not pose an ongoing threat to neighbors. The home is in The Lake Club, a gated subdivision where residents said they were stunned by the violence and struggled to understand how it could happen in a quiet, family-focused community.

Paul Henne, a resident of The Lake Club, told local media the neighborhood is typically calm and that the news hit hard because many families nearby have children. Warren said the father returned from South America and was met with what he called an “incredible emotional day,” as investigators and deputies worked to notify him and secure the scene. Warren said deputies who responded had to witness something no parent or first responder expects to see, and he described the toll on the family’s relatives as investigators worked to reach additional family members outside the country.

The Lake Club at Lakewood Ranch issued a statement saying it was aware of a tragic incident in the community and that the matter remained under investigation by the sheriff’s office. The statement said the community did not have additional information to provide and would not comment further while the case remained active. Officials said the investigation would continue until the medical examiner’s findings are complete and detectives finish reviewing evidence that could clarify the events leading up to the deaths.

As of early March, sheriff’s officials said the case remained active, with investigators continuing to review the circumstances and waiting for the district medical examiner to release official determinations. No court proceedings are expected because the suspected killer is dead, but detectives said they would continue working to document the timeline and provide a final accounting for the family.
