Florida mother accused of stabbing daughter’s boyfriend in home

Police say the daughter was hurt trying to intervene as both victims went to a hospital.

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. — A 54-year-old Florida woman was arrested after police say she stabbed her daughter’s boyfriend and wounded her daughter during a struggle inside a Pinellas Park home on Feb. 23, leaving both victims with injuries that authorities said were not life-threatening.

The suspect, Sandra Kegley, faces a charge of attempted first-degree murder and a charge tied to the stabbing of her daughter, according to reports citing arrest records and a police news release. The case has drawn attention because investigators say Kegley told authorities she attacked the young man to “free” him from what she described as a “simulation” and an “illusion” of life. Police have not publicly offered a broader motive and said the investigation remains open.

Officers were called to the 6200 block of 108th Avenue N about 4:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, after a report of a domestic stabbing, police said. When they arrived, they found Eric Smith, 23, and Kyrsten Bleattler, 25, suffering from injuries described by police as “various stab wounds and cuts.” Both were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Investigators said Bleattler was injured while trying to stop her mother from attacking Smith, who police identified as Bleattler’s boyfriend.

Police said Kegley was taken into custody and booked on charges that include attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. The public record summaries cited in media reports did not immediately spell out where each person was standing when the stabbing began, how many times either victim was cut, or what kind of knife was used. Authorities also have not said what sparked the confrontation earlier in the afternoon, whether anyone else was inside the residence, or whether there had been prior calls for service at the address.

What investigators have described publicly is the statement they say Kegley gave after the attack. According to reports citing an arrest document, Kegley told authorities she stabbed Smith because she believed she was freeing him from a “simulation,” calling life an “illusion.” Police have not said whether she made similar comments during the incident itself or whether she appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Officials also have not released information about any mental health history, and they have not said whether she will undergo a court-ordered evaluation.

The incident adds to a growing list of domestic violence calls that local agencies in Florida and around the country say often turn violent with little warning, particularly when multiple family members are involved in a fast-moving confrontation. In this case, police described two victims from the same household connection, with one person hurt while attempting to protect the other. Investigators typically work to reconstruct such scenes through medical records, victim interviews, and physical evidence collected at the home, including any weapon recovered and any bloodstain patterns or damage inside the residence.

As of early Tuesday, Kegley was being held in the Pinellas County Jail on a $500,000 bond, according to jail information cited in reports. Police said the case remains under investigation, which can include additional interviews once victims are able to speak with detectives, a review of any 911 audio, and follow-up work to confirm a precise timeline. Authorities have not announced a first court date in public statements, and prosecutors have not publicly said whether additional charges are possible.

Neighbors on the block where police responded described a heavy law enforcement presence Monday afternoon, with patrol cars outside the residence as paramedics treated two people. Police have not released photographs from inside the home, but they did identify the scene by block number and said both injured people were transported for care. In similar cases, detectives often seek to determine whether an attack was planned or impulsive, whether any threats were made beforehand, and whether there are text messages or other records that help explain what happened.

Bleattler and Smith remained in the hospital after the stabbing, and authorities said their injuries were not considered life-threatening. Police have not provided an update on when either might be released or whether either victim has spoken publicly. The next major milestone is expected to be Kegley’s first court appearance, when a judge can address bond conditions and the formal status of the charges.
