Auburndale, FL — Tragedy struck a central Florida community after a teenager was arrested for the fatal stabbing of his mother in what authorities are calling a calculated act of violence. The incident occurred in a mobile home in The Hamptons, a senior living community in Auburndale. This arrest comes on the heels of a previous legal confrontation in Oklahoma, where the same teenager faced accusations over the deadly shooting of his father.
Sheriff Grady Judd of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office outlined in a press conference that deputies were dispatched around 6 p.m. Sunday following a distressing 911 call from the teen. He claimed his mother, 39-year-old Catherine Griffith, accidentally fell on a knife during a heated argument.
Upon arrival, officers found Griffith deceased with a fatal stab wound to her neck, inflicted, according to investigations, by a 12-inch kitchen knife. Despite the teen’s assertion that the stabbing was an accident, evidence and medical examination suggest otherwise. The preliminary findings inside the home did not indicate signs of a struggle, further casting doubt on the teenager’s account of events.
The suspect immediately requested legal representation when police arrived, an action that prompted officials to scrutinize his version of the events. “It’s a cold-blooded murder,” Sheriff Judd stated, refuting the idea that Griffith’s death was anything but intentional.
Earlier on the day of the killing, local witnesses reported seeing the mother and son engaged in a public altercation outside the home. Judd revealed that some saw the teen forcefully pulling his mother inside the residence while she pleaded to be let go.

His troubled past also includes psychiatric intervention under Florida’s Baker Act because of threats he made to either harm himself or his mother.
In a separate incident last year linked to escalated domestic issues, the teen was detained after assaulting Griffith for confiscating his video game privileges. This event marked one of several behavioral red flags leading up to this tragic outcome.
Adding a layer of complexity, the suspect had faced legal challenges previously when he was arrested for the killing of his father in Oklahoma. In that case, the charges were eventually dropped due to insufficient evidence against the teenager’s claims of self-defense.
