Bradenton, Fla. — A former ballerina received a 20-year prison sentence on Tuesday for the 2020 fatal shooting of her estranged husband, an incident that drew widespread media attention and comparisons to the psychological thriller, “Black Swan.” Ashley Benefield, 32, was convicted of manslaughter with a firearm in July, following an ordeal that ended the life of 58-year-old Doug Benefield during a heated argument.
During her trial, Ashley claimed she acted in self-defense at her mother’s home in Florida, where she had relocated after leaving her husband in South Carolina. She testified that she fired the gun while fearing for her life as Doug Benefield allegedly advanced on her aggressively. According to her account, after urging him to stop, she perceived his actions as threatening and reacted by shooting.
The couple’s swift marriage, occurring less than two weeks after they met, was plagued by troubles from the outset, as reported by sources close to the situation. Following the tragic death of his first wife, Doug Benefield married Ashley when he was 54 and she was 24. Their relationship deteriorated amid escalating tensions, including disputes over the handling of Doug’s teenage daughter and a failed joint venture to start a ballet company.
Ashley Benefield had also accused her husband of dangerous behavior, including alleged poisoning, which she claimed had also targeted his late first wife. These allegations were investigated but resulted in no charges. Differences seemed momentarily set aside as they planned to relocate to Maryland in 2020, but underlying issues persisted.
On the day of the shooting, September 27, 2020, the couple was alone at Ashley’s mother’s house, preparing to move. Their daughter was out with her grandmother, a situation that left the spouses in a potentially volatile setting. Neighbors reported a confrontation escalated quickly, with shouting heard shortly before Ashley emerged, seeking help while claiming self-defense.
Investigators found that Doug Benefield suffered two gunshot wounds, with the fatal shot hitting his chest after he apparently turned away from Ashley. This detail played a crucial role in the trial, undermining the self-defense claim.
In the weeks leading up to the shooting, it was revealed in court discussions that Ashley had prepared an escape plan from her allegedly abusive marriage. This plan included securing a safe location, obtaining a burner phone, and renting a car under an alias. Her lawyer argued that these preparations were indicative of her fear and the tense atmosphere surrounding their relationship.
Despite the defense’s portrayal of a fraught marriage prompting desperate measures, the prosecution successfully argued the actions were premeditated, leading to Ashley’s arrest five weeks post-incident.
Ashley Benefield now faces two decades behind bars, followed by ten years of probation, her future starkly contrasted by her past in the world of dance and a tumultuous marriage that ended in tragedy.
