Former Colorado Developer Fatally Shot in Belize in Suspected Targeted Attack

BELIZE CITY, Belize – Authorities in Belize are treating the recent killing of 56-year-old Boris Mannsfeld, a former Colorado real estate developer, as a deliberate assassination. Mannsfeld, who had relocated to the Central American nation in 2006, was fatally shot in his seaside home’s backyard last week, Belize Police Commissioner Chester Williams reported.

Williams clarified at a Monday news conference that Mannsfeld, who had been sporadically living between Belize and Colorado, arrived in Belize on the same day he was murdered. The circumstances surrounding his death strongly suggest that this was a contracted killing, though no official motive has been confirmed as of yet.

Williams detailed a complex web of relationships and prior incidents involving Mannsfeld and other associates, potentially illuminating the backdrop of his murder. Mannsfeld had been connected to two men, Ricardo Borja and Darren Taylor, both acquaintances who themselves met violent ends. While arrests have been made in connection with Taylor’s death, with suspects currently awaiting trial, the case of Borja’s murder remains unsolved. Adding to the intrigue, Frik De Meyere, another associate of Mannsfeld and previous employee, has been detained as a person of interest related to the series of deaths.

De Meyere, who had worked directly under Mannsfeld at the latter’s Belize-based real estate firm for over a decade, parted ways to start a competing company earlier this year. Despite his current questioning, De Meyere has not yet been charged in connection with Mannsfeld’s killing.

The murder scene provided a grim view – Mannsfeld was discovered face down, deceased from a gunshot to the neck, in the yard of Cocoplum Villas at Maya Beach. This luxury development was one of his significant projects in Belize. Not far from his body, police found a licensed firearm registered in Mannsfeld’s name, suggesting he might have been aware of his vulnerability but was unable to defend himself effectively.

Having moved from Denver and founded Boris Mannsfeld & Associates in Placencia, Belize, in 2010, the real estate developer spent three decades of his career focusing on developing local real estate, molding the region’s landscape with high-end properties.

In light of the ongoing investigation, acting general manager of Boris Mannsfeld & Associates, Arlette Gomez, stated that the company is currently not issuing any statements concerning Mannsfeld’s death.

While the link between the violent deaths of Mannsfeld, Borja, and Taylor has not been explicitly established by investigators, Commissioner Williams hinted that the connections among these cases are being closely scrutinized. The tragic end of Mannsfeld underscores a narrative of tangled alliances and undefined motives, painting a complex picture of personal and professional entanglements that could have led to his untimely demise.
