New York, NY — Former New York Gov. David Paterson and his 20-year-old stepson, Anthony Sliwa, were assaulted by a group of teenagers during a nighttime altercation on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The incident took place near a local McDonald’s where the two were walking the family dog, police reported on Saturday.
The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. Friday when Anthony Sliwa, son of Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa, encountered the group of teens earlier in the evening. Authorities said the confrontation began after Sliwa asked the teenagers to descend from a fire escape they were climbing next to the McDonald’s.
According to a police source, the situation escalated quickly when the younger Sliwa, upon encountering the teens again outside the fast-food restaurant, exchanged words with them. Surveillance footage reviewed by local witnesses indicates that the confrontation turned physical shortly after Paterson entered the McDonald’s.
Four teenagers reportedly attacked Anthony as Paterson reemerged from the establishment. A witness remarked that despite the attackers’ numbers, Anthony managed to hold his own, credit to his martial arts training. “He was defending himself effectively, even managing to throw down one of his assailants,” the witness added.
During the scuffle, one of the teenagers in a blue shirt struck Paterson in the back of the head. Both victims sustained injuries in the brief yet violent ordeal. The former governor, who is legally blind, suffered head bruises and some pain, while Anthony received a cut lip.
Both Paterson and his stepson were treated at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center and were released early Saturday morning. Although they experienced physical injuries, they fought off the attackers successfully.
In the aftermath of the attack, Paterson’s spokesperson, Sean Darcy, made a statement, appealing to the public and the media to handle the incident with sensitivity and discretion, urging them to avoid exploiting the situation for personal or political advantage. He emphasized that Paterson’s primary focus currently remained on other matters, specifically mentioning New York Mets pitcher Kodai Senga’s game on that day.
The police have since released surveillance photos of the suspects and are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying them. No arrests had been made as of the latest updates.
The local community has been shaken by the incident, with many expressing concern and support for Paterson and his stepson. Neighbors described Anthony Sliwa as a responsible and kind individual who is often seen taking care of the family pet.
Curtis Sliwa, reflecting on the attack, expressed pride in his son’s ability to protect himself and Paterson. He highlighted Anthony’s years of training in martial arts and his role as a Guardian Angel, emphasizing his commitment to the safety of others.
As they recover from the ordeal, Paterson and Anthony Sliwa continue to receive support from various quarters, including Mayor Adams, who expressed his intent to reach out to the former governor, whom he described as a good friend.
The incident underscored the unpredictable nature of street violence in New York City, reminding residents and officials alike of the ongoing challenges in ensuring public safety.
